Working Principle and Maintenance of RCBOs

An RCBO or residual-current operated circuit breaker with overload protection combines the functions of an RCCB and an MCB in one device. RCCBs detect earth faults and trip the circuit, while MCBs protect against overcurrent and short-circuit faults. RCBOs incorporate both of these protection mechanisms to provide comprehensive protection for electrical circuits.

The working principle of the RCCB function in an RCBO is based on the detection of current imbalance. Under normal conditions, the current flowing through the live and neutral lines are equal. When an earth fault occurs, the faulty current returns to the source through the earth instead of the neutral line, causing an imbalance in the currents. The RCCB detects this difference in live and neutral currents and promptly trips the circuit by actuating a mechanism to release the operating handle and disconnect the contacts. The detection of overload and short-circuit currents by the MCB function causes the same tripping action.

RCBOs require periodic inspection, testing, and maintenance to ensure proper functioning. A visual inspection of the exterior and interior should check for any physical damage, wear or corrosion. Wiring, contacts, and the operating mechanism should be thoroughly examined. Any issues found should be addressed immediately.

Functional testing should be performed at least once every 3-6 months. The test involves intentionally creating a simulated earth fault to verify the RCCB function trips according to specifications. The timing of the trip should be within the limits recommended by the manufacturer. Contact resistance, insulation resistance and overload trip tests should also be conducted to check the MCB functionality.

Arc fault detection can be tested on arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) RCBOs using a specialised arcing tester to simulate parallel sparking and series sparking faults. The timing of the trip should comply with UL standards for AFCI devices.

More extensive testing using advanced circuit breaker test sets can conduct timing, contact evaluation and performance tests under different voltage and temperature conditions according to IEC standards for RCBOs. This helps determine if the RCBO can continue to operate safely and trip within the required limits across its operating range.

By routinely conducting inspections, maintenance and function tests on RCBOs according to standards and manufacturers' recommendations, potential faults or failures can be detected and addressed early before disruption occurs. Like all overcurrent protection devices, RCBOs must be properly maintained to maximise electrical safety, reliability and uptime. An RCBO should be replaced if tests suggest it can no longer provide adequate protection.
